Step 1

Position the machine so that it is convenient for you to remove any wheel from it at least from one side. Start with the front brake pads as it is not difficult to check for wear on disc brakes.

Step 2

Turn the steering wheel to the side where you will see the amount of brake pad wear, tighten the handbrake and remove the front wheel. The brake caliper has a viewing window through which you can see the remaining layer of friction material - ferodo. If the material is not visible under the available lighting, shine a flashlight on it. On new pads, the thickness of the friction linings in most cases is 10mm. When they are 2mm thick, replace the pads.

Step 3

In addition to the absolute thickness of the material, the uniformity of its wear is of great importance. If pad wear occurs at an angle, then one of the brake caliper guides is jammed. If one block wears out much more, then both guides are jammed. Correct the problem and replace such pads, then mount the wheel to the machine.

Step 4

Check the second wheel in the same way, if possible at this stage. After checking the front brake pads, check the rear as well. Drum brakes are completely enclosed mechanisms and cannot be inspected without removing the brake drums.

Step 5

Before jacking up the rear wheel, place blocks under the front wheel, one in the front and one in the back. This is because the parking brake does not apply to the front wheels. With the wheel raised, sit in the driver's seat and press the brake pedal. While holding it, remove the car from the parking brake and slowly release the pedal. Make sure the vehicle is securely in place.

Step 6

Remove the rear wheel. Using two M8 bolts, press the brake drum off its seat. This is done like this: screw the M8 bolts into 2 holes on the drum. Gradually tightening them with a socket wrench, achieve the most even descent of the drum from its seat.

Step 7

If necessary, correct it with light hammer blows through the plywood board. When the drum is heavily worn, a shoulder forms, which prevents the drum from being removed. In this case, through the hole in the drum or in the protective apron, using a flat screwdriver, turn the adjusting bolt, flatten the brake pads. This process is inconvenient because the pads have to be brought together by touch, since no additional viewing windows are provided.

Step 8

After removing the brake drum, unscrew the M8 bolts from it. Inspect the brake pads. The initial thickness of the friction coating is 3-4mm, depending on the size of the brake. If the residual thickness of the coating anywhere in the pads is 0.5 mm or less, replace the brake pads. Uneven wear on drum brake pads is not a reason to replace them.

Step 9

Install the brake drum, adjust the brake pads. This must be done in order not to get different braking force on the right and left wheels. This is done simply: using a flat screwdriver, through a window in the drum or in a protective apron, turn the adjusting wheel until the pads touch the drum. The clamping force should be minimal so that the drum rotates freely.

Step 10

Install the rear wheel and do this with the second rear wheel.
