According to paragraph 4.5.1, this height on tires for passenger cars must be at least 1.6 mm; for winter tires and tires marked with the "M + S" sign - 4.0 mm; for buses - 2.0 mm and for trucks - 1.0 mm.

Step 1
First of all, it should be noted that you can check tire wear in any car service, at any car service station. Experts will carry out a full thorough inspection with professional conclusions and recommendations. You can check the wear yourself with a tire tread gauge. A foreign and domestic manufacturer produces them today in a variety of types and modifications, including digital ones. Insert the gauge probe into the groove of the tread and read the readings on a ruler or an electronic display. Correlate them with the requirements of traffic rules and draw a conclusion.
Step 2
You can also check tire wear with a vernier caliper. Insert the tool needle into the groove of the area to be tested and lower the body onto the surface of the splint. Read the result.
You can measure the residual tread height with a metal ruler. The "0" mark on the ruler is at the beginning of the web. Insert a ruler with this end into the groove. The readout of the mark coinciding with the tire surface will give you the residual tread height.
Step 3
Some foreign manufacturers (for example, Michelin and Nokian) produce tires with numbers printed on the inside of the tread. The numbers are erased together with the rubber, and the numbers preserved, thus, indicate the residual height of the pattern. Based on these readings, you will also not miss the moment when it is time to change the tires.

In the USA and Western Europe, tire wear is checked using coins: one dollar, one cent, 1 euro coin. The coin is inserted into the most worn part of the tire, and the residual tread height is determined from the protruding parts of the image. For example, on the dollar - this is the hair of Washington, on a one-cent coin - the top of Lincoln, on the euro - the gold part of the coin must be buried in the tread. You can use the domestic two-ruble coin. Lower the coin upside down into the groove of the tread. If the tops are recessed or close to the surface of the tire, everything is fine, you can still ride.
