Step 1
Each vehicle has its own criteria for the frequency of replacement of brake pads. Basically, motorists believe that the pads need to be replaced after 8-10 thousand kilometers. This indicator is general and you should not completely focus on it. Each driver has an individual driving style: someone calmly drives a car, in this case the pads can work up to 20 thousand kilometers, and those who like fast driving and sudden stops have to change the pads after 5-6 thousand kilometers. In addition, there are many parameters that contribute to the wear of the pads: the quality of the brake elements, the environment, temperature fluctuations, etc.
Step 2
The wear of the pads is evidenced by the presence of brake dust with an admixture of metal shavings on the wheel disks, as well as a very sharp, or, conversely, excessively weak braking, the presence of beating at the moment of braking. If your car has similar problems, check the brake pads.
Step 3
Place the vehicle on an inspection hole or jack to check the wear of the brake pads and front brakes.
Step 4
Unscrew the front wheels using the telescopic wrench. When checking the brake pads on the left, turn the steering wheel to the left, and when checking the right braking elements, turn the steering wheel to the right.
Step 5
Determine the thickness of the brake pads through the inspection hole in the moving caliper. If the thickness of the friction lining is 1.5 mm or less, the pads should be replaced.
Step 6
To check the rear brake pads, place a jack under the rear wheels and unscrew them, and also remove the brake drum.
Step 7
Use a caliper or ruler to measure the thickness of the friction pads. If it is less than 1.5 mm, replace the rear brake pads as well.
