Friction linings pressed against the brake disc or drum are an important part of a vehicle's braking system. It is necessary to regularly change brake pads, as worn ones significantly impair the quality of braking and negatively affect road safety.
Instructions
Step 1
First of all, be guided by the frequency of replacing the pads. If the time for their replacement is right, then the wear is strong enough and may be close to a critical level. Manufacturers set different pad replacement times for different cars. On the other hand, pad wear is greatly influenced by the driving style used by the driver. So, with a calm driving style, the pads can work up to 20 thousand km, and with aggressive and sharp driving, they can approach a critical level after running 5-6 thousand. The wear rate is influenced by the quality of the pads themselves, the operating conditions of the car and many other factors.
Step 2
The wear of the brake pads is indicated by the beating during heavy braking. This is due to uneven wear on the brake pad. As a result, cracks and chips can form on the last. From here comes the beating and noise during braking. It should be noted that the same effect occurs when the brake disc is worn. At the same time, the disc is being drilled or replaced with a new one.
Step 3
Inadequate moments in the behavior of the braking system may signal the necessary replacement of worn brake pads. For example, if the braking system becomes too weak, the pedal is depressed lower when pressed, and the deceleration rate decreases markedly. Or, conversely, too harsh behavior of the braking system. In this case, a sharp blocking of the wheels indicates the final wear of the friction lining and the ongoing friction between metal and metal.
Step 4
The presence of brake dust with inclusions from metal shavings on the rims is also a clear sign of brake pad wear. However, there may be no other signs of wear. The presence of brake dust can be determined by looking under the wheel cover. A uniformly dark, charcoal-colored coating means that the wear of the pads is close to critical. The presence of metal shavings in the plaque indicates that the pad is completely worn out and scratches the brake disc. An immediate call to a service station is required. Please note: This method is not suitable for vehicles with alloy rims and / or ventilated brakes.
