Almost every cyclist has once faced a difficult choice: go to the store, leaving his vehicle on the street, or first get home and go back for shopping on foot. After all, a bicycle left unattended can attract the attention of professional hijackers or ordinary hooligans. So if you want to find your steel friend on your return in the same place where he was left, you need to provide him with reliable protection against theft.

Step 1
Use a metal cable lock to secure your bike. Keep in mind that you can get rid of it with wire cutters, so it is better to choose the thickest cable, at least not already 10-12 mm. For those who want to ride without the knowledge of the owner, any lock will be a hindrance, but the thickness of the cable can scare off the hijackers: they are unlikely to want to make great efforts.
Step 2
Use an iron chain lock as an alternative to a cable. It will be more difficult to overcome such an anti-theft agent with the help of wire cutters, however, a strong chain weighs a lot. To better protect the bike and further complicate the life of intruders, choose a chain with a non-standard shape of the links - they are more difficult and longer to saw.
Step 3
Lock your bike with a special U-lock. It may not be very convenient to carry, but it is stronger and more reliable than cables and chains. Its most vulnerable point is the lock cylinder, so it should be placed closer to some fixed object in order to complicate the burglar's task.
Step 4
When leaving your bike unattended, fasten it to the frame, not the wheels - they can be removed very quickly and even without the use of tools. Forgetting this rule, you risk finding only a wheel on your return. Before attaching the bike to anything with a chain or rope, make sure that the object is strong enough so that it really won't budge.
Step 5
Avoid parking your bike in unlit, deserted lanes. Not every attacker will dare to steal your steel friend in plain sight.
Step 6
Make your bike stand out and unique. The easiest way to make it unique is to paint the frame in a bright color, or better yet, in several different colors. The more a bike stands out from others, the more chances that the hijackers won't wear it, because it attracts too much attention from others.
