The fuel rail is a stainless steel tube designed to supply fuel under pressure and then distribute it between the injectors. The ramp has a special connection for connecting a pressure gauge, with the help of which the pressure is monitored.

The core of the fuel rail is a round or rectangular tube that is bolted to the engine intake manifold. The ramp serves to supply pressurized fuel with its subsequent distribution between the injectors, the number of which depends on the number of cylinders in the block. The injectors can either be fixed directly on the ramp, or be located at a distance, while the fuel is supplied through separate pipes.

The fuel rail is an integral part of the injection system of almost all modern automobile engines. For the first time, the fuel rail was used on diesel engines, in which it was necessary to provide fuel injection under pressure. In the previously widespread carburetor engines, the installation of the ramp was not necessary, since the supply of fuel under pressure was not required.

Design features

The pressure of the fuel in the rail is controlled using a pressure gauge connected using a special fitting, the hole for which is provided in its design. In the normal position, the fitting is closed with a plug that protects its threads from contamination. Rail pressure monitoring is carried out during inspections of the technical condition of the vehicle.

To improve fuel atomization, in some engines, the design of the fuel rail provides for the possibility of preheating it. Also on the ramp there are fittings for fuel supply and discharge.

Manufacturing

The material for the fuel rail is alloy steel, which protects the inner cavity in contact with the fuel from corrosion. After manufacture, the ramp undergoes a mandatory test for its ability to withstand overpressure.

Fuel Rail Operation

To inspect and troubleshoot the fuel rail, it may be necessary to remove it from the engine. In this case, the fuel supply is turned off, after which the fuel supply hose is disconnected. Then the drain hose is removed, which allows you to dismantle the ramp from the body by unscrewing the mounting bolts with a wrench. Then, with the utmost care, the nozzles are removed, the nozzles of which are prudently closed with protective plugs. After inspection and elimination of the identified defects, the ramp is mounted on the engine in the reverse order.
