Heated windshield wipers increase the convenience of using the car in winter by quickly warming the windshield and freeing it from snow and ice, as well as preventing the wipers themselves from freezing to the glass.

How to make heated wipers

Necessary

nichrome wire, wires, awl, pliers, knife, soldering iron

Instructions

Step 1

For self-heating of the wipers, select a model of wipers that has a through hole in the rubber tape and a plastic profile for attaching this tape.

Step 2

Use a 0.3 mm diameter nichrome wire as a heating element with a length equal to two lengths of the windscreen wipers. The heating element must be flat for the wiper to adhere well to the glass. If the heating element is taken from the heating coil, it must be aligned. To do this, slide the spiral over the awl and pull out the piece of wire with pliers. Heat red hot in any way and refrigerate.

Step 3

Cut from the wire a workpiece equal in length to the wiper plus 100 mm. Bend this end equal to 100 mm. Install the long end of the wire inside the through hole of the wiper, and with the short end pierce the rubber element so that the wire does not under any circumstances close to the adapter installed on the profile.

Step 4

Gently pull on both ends of the wire until it is completely inside the rubber wiper element. Be especially careful at the final stage. Do not twist the wire. In the place of twisting, breakage or burnout of the heating element is possible. At the bent end of the wire, make a loop and put on the insulation of a suitable diameter. The loop is necessary to compensate for the temperature deformations of the rubber and the heating element. In the middle of the plastic profile, make two holes for the heater outlet.

Step 5

Insert the ends of the heating element into the profile and put on the rubber band. Bend the ends of the heater and solder with soldering acid. At the same time, solder a wire with a cross-section of 2x0, 2, 20 cm long. Protect the soldering point with a glued cut of the profile. Solder a 2x0, 35 wire 1.5 m long to the 2x0, 2 wire. Close the soldering point with a heat-shrinkable tube. Place the power connector on the free end of the wire.

Step 6

Connect through the cigarette lighter. Route the wires through the engine compartment and secure them with metal fasteners to the rear wall of the engine compartment. Use this fastener to connect the ground.
