Today, the question of a quick stop of the car becomes more relevant than a few years ago, since the maximum speed of a car increases every year. To improve safety, most automotive braking systems use disc brakes.
Disc brakes are currently the most effective. Cast iron brake discs are installed on ordinary city cars. This is a fairly durable material that suits this role much better than steel. Discs made of it have a better price-quality ratio than sports ceramic ones. Since the front axle of the vehicle carries most of the braking load, it uses ventilated discs. Their essence lies in the fact that to remove heat in the disk there are guides that constantly pass a large volume of air through the cavities, removing heat. This simple solution significantly extends the brake system's operating time during active driving with frequent braking.
Although the resource of cast iron discs is long enough, it does not last forever. And when they are severely worn down or damaged due to active braking in puddles, car owners are faced with a choice problem when buying. Oddly enough, lightweight perforated discs with a clearly sporty character are very attractive on the market. However, behind the bright facade hides a reduced resource and less reliability. Extra holes do not benefit the strength of this material. In addition, buyers often forget the fact that non-original discs from well-known manufacturers show the best performance only when paired with brake pads from the same manufacturer. Since during the tests the most effective composition for the pads is selected. That is why for those who like to drive fast, experts advise to choose the products of one of the well-known brands. For those who want to save more, discs without perforation are recommended. They have a large contact area with the pads and great strength. Which is more important in everyday city driving.
For fans of motorsport, ceramic discs were left for dessert. Despite the fact that the materials themselves from which they are produced are relatively inexpensive, the production technology is very expensive. This affects the final price. As a result, the car owner can get an almost perfect solution for his braking system. Such discs are very resistant to overheating. Do not lose their properties in long series of braking. And of course, as always, they work only with the original set of pads for a given disc. They are not afraid of perforation, since the margin of physical strength is very high. Such discs are common on sports cars and practically useless on regular cars. This is due to the negative effects on braking surfaces of normal road dirt and slush, which are not found on racetracks.
As you can see, the rules for choosing disks are very simple. And the main indicator to be guided by is safety when braking.
