The GPS navigation system offers several ways of using it. Car and portable navigators work autonomously. If you want to navigate the terrain using a laptop, connect an external GPS receiver to it.

Instructions

Step 1

The receiver can be connected using USB or Bluetooth port. In the first case, it will be enough for you to insert the cable into the corresponding connector, and the computer will detect the device itself. If this does not happen, you may need to install drivers for your particular receiver model. They can be found on the manufacturer's website or you can install the ones that were included in the delivery set of the navigator.

Step 2

To connect devices via the wireless port, start the receiver. Then turn on Bluetooth on the laptop by pressing the key combination that is indicated in the instructions for the computer (usually this is a combination of one of the keys with Fn). For the computer to detect the navigator, go to the "Bluetooth Devices" folder through the control panel, click on the "Add" button. In the list that appears, select your navigator and start the setup wizard.

Step 3

A separate virtual port is required to transfer data from the receiver to the computer. You can find its number in the instructions of the navigator or determine using a special program. Find an application called GPS Information on your navigation software disc. In the window that opens, click on the Scan COM-ports button - this will start the process of scanning for available COM ports. Copy the number found by the program.

Step 4

Install the navigation software on your laptop. Its choice depends on the conditions and for what purposes you will use the equipment. Some programs work on the basis of scanned maps, they are very detailed and accurate - suitable for hiking. Electronic maps "weigh" less, which means they do not slow down the work of the navigator. They are convenient for road use. On such maps, you can plan a route taking into account traffic jam information. In the settings of the selected program, specify the number of the found virtual port.

Step 5

While scanning the COM ports, you can check the health of the navigator. Click on the Start GPS button, numbers should appear at the bottom of the window - the navigator will start connecting with satellites and determining your coordinates. To continue working on setting up navigation, disable the running scan.
