The need to replace the valve stem seals becomes obvious if there is an increased oil consumption, and a characteristic bluish smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe at some engine operating modes. It is important not only to be able to replace the caps, but also to choose them correctly.

It is necessary

  • - device for compression of valve springs;
  • - tweezers or magnetized screwdriver;
  • - a device for removing the valve stem seals.

Instructions

Step 1

To check the condition of the valve stem seals, start the engine, let it idle a little, then press the accelerator pedal sharply and see what kind of smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe. If it is blue or gray, the valve stem seals do not cope with their function and need to be replaced. The second option for checking: on a warm engine, raise the revs to four thousand, then suddenly drop the gas. If gray smoke comes out, the valve stem seals must be replaced. Please note that in the event that blue smoke goes on in all operating modes, it becomes thicker with increasing speed, and compression in the cylinders drops, worn piston rings are to blame.

Step 2

Start replacing the valve stem seals by disconnecting the negative lead from the battery. Then remove the cylinder head cover and put the piston of the first cylinder in the TDC (top dead center) position of the compression stroke. The piston of the fourth cylinder will also be in the same position. This is to prevent the valves from dropping into the cylinders.

Step 3

Loosen the rocker arm shaft bolts evenly, then remove them. Please note that they have different head shapes. When reassembling, the bolts will need to be reinstalled, so note their location.

Step 4

Remove the valve drive shaft together with the rocker arms. Install the valve spring compression tool by screwing the rocker arm shaft bolt into one of the cylinder head holes. Attach the spring compressor to this bolt.

Step 5

Compress the valve spring. Using tweezers or a magnetized screwdriver, remove two biscuits from her plate. Remove the spring compression device, then its plate and the spring itself. Using a special tool for removing the valve stem seals, remove the seal. It can also be pulled out with pliers, while it is important not to turn from side to side, but to pull straight up.

Step 6

Install a new cap by lubricating the inside with engine oil. Using a mandrel, carefully press in the cap. Reassemble all previously removed items. After that, in the same way, replace the caps of the second valve and two valves of the fourth cylinder. Next, set the pistons of the second and third cylinders to TDC and, according to the algorithm described above, replace the valve stem seals.
