Differences in technical parameters

So, the main difference between an 8-valve engine and a 16-valve engine is power. In the latter, it is larger, because the intake of the fuel mixture and the release of gases are much easier to carry out. 8 valves have one inlet and one outlet. 16-valve motors have two such holes. It is this factor that affects the engine power.

But it is also worth noting that the torque and power for both types of motors are different at low and high speeds. So, 8-valve engines have more power at low revs, while the same 16-valve will be weaker. But at high engine speeds, the picture is reversed.

16-valve engines are very fond of overheating, and this does not affect them very well. 8-valve motors are a little harder to overheat. It is not uncommon for 16-valve engines to break down due to overheating. Breakage, as a rule, is in the cylinder head and in the valves themselves. In order to prevent overheating, you need to monitor the quality and level of oil, the quality of gasoline. Poor quality fuel should not be poured into the tank.

Differences in design and maintenance

Of course, you will find a lot of differences in the design of engines. The most important thing is the more complex design of the cylinder head for 16-valve engines (it is precisely because of the more complex design of the cylinder head that engines are prone to overheating). It has two camshafts that drive a pair of valves. The 8-valve engine has only one camshaft, which also drives a pair of valves.

From here you can see another feature - the timing belt of the 16-valve motor is longer, since it drives two shafts. Hence, its cost is higher. Also pay attention to the presence of the second video. Likewise, replacing valves and camshafts will be more expensive.
