Replacing the valve stem seals (also known as valve seals) is a very simple and short-lived operation. However, the result can be the cessation of the increased oil consumption and the restoration of the normal CO content in the exhaust gases, which will increase the engine's service life.

All work on replacing the valve stem seals can be carried out directly on the engine - it is not necessary to remove it. All you need to do is to dismantle the camshaft installed on the cylinder head (or cylinder head) and have a valve rake on hand, which can be purchased or "borrowed" from a familiar motorist.

Removing the valve stem seals

After the camshaft is removed, it is necessary to set the pistons of the 1st, 4th cylinder in the position of the top dead center (or TDC). To do this, unscrew the spark plugs and, turning the crankshaft, bring both pistons to the maximum upper position. If you have a front-wheel drive car, then this can be done by placing any front wheel that needs to be turned until the pistons are in the required position. On a rear-wheel drive car, the crankshaft can be turned with a special key.

Insert any suitable object, such as 6 mm wire, into the spark plug hole so that the valve does not fall into the cylinder. Install the drying agent and fix its bracket with the nut on the nearest stud - you should start with the first cylinder. Now depress the spring and use a small flat screwdriver to remove a couple of crackers (it is better to do this together with your partner). Loosen the device and pull out the valve plate, springs (there are two of them). Next, remove the old valve stem seal from the pressed-in guide sleeve; this can be done with an inertial puller or pliers - just pull the cap up. The next step is to remove the caps on the 4th cylinder. Then you need to turn the crankshaft in such a way (180 degrees) to set the pistons of the 1st, 3rd cylinders to the TDC position.

Installing valve stem seals

Pay attention to the complete set of caps; a number of manufacturers supply with spare parts a guide bush with a removable mandrel to facilitate the installation of new parts. If these devices are available, then further it is necessary to lubricate the surface of the new cap with engine oil, install it on the supplied mounting sleeve and move until the latter rests against the surface of the cylinder head. After that, using a mandrel, it is necessary to pull out the locating sleeve.

If there are no accessories in the set of caps, then you can use, for example, a piece of water pipe or a nut head that matches the diameter of the new valve stem seals. After the latter are mounted on the guide bushings, you can install crackers, springs, valve plates. To do this, you need to use the desiccant again.
