After replacing the timing belt or the high pressure fuel pump (injection pump) on a diesel engine, there is often a problem with finding the marks on which it is necessary to set the injection pump pulley. Its incorrect position leads to untimely fuel supply and improper engine operation. To avoid this, you should proceed in a proven way.
Instructions
Step 1
First of all, unscrew the high pressure pipe from the injector of the first cylinder of the engine. Slide the clear plastic tube over it so that it points upwards so that you can clearly see the level of fuel filling it. The tube should adhere well to the nozzle. Use a screw clamp to secure it. Fuel must not leak!
Step 2
Remove the timing belt (timing) from the fuel pump and turn on the ignition. Start turning the high pressure pump pulley using any convenient wrench. You need to twist until the incoming fuel begins to rise in the tube. After that, smoothly and slowly turn the pump pulley, carefully observing the fuel level in the pipe.
Step 3
As soon as you notice a fluctuation in the fuel level in the tube, this will mean the beginning of its flow to the injector. At this moment (this is the moment of injection), the rotation of the pulley should be stopped and a mark should be applied to it. After that, you can set the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys in accordance with this mark. Align the marks and install the timing belt.
Step 4
Before you try to start the engine, remember to screw the high pressure pipe to the injector on the first cylinder that you removed earlier.
