Regardless of which engine is installed on the VAZ 2109, the composition of the timing mechanism remains the same. True, there is a difference in the alternator drive pulleys. A wide multi-groove belt is installed on the injection engine, and a V-shaped belt on the carburetor engine. But these details do not apply to the timing, since they do not affect the gas distribution functions in any way. The pulley has teeth that are necessary for the engine speed sensor to work. To remove the belt and put it on correctly, you just need to follow a certain sequence of actions.

Removing the timing belt

So, first, open the hood and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. In the process of operation, you will have to move the generator, you can accidentally touch its conclusions and short to ground. Then we raise the right side of the car on a jack and remove the wheel. Without removing the wheel, it will not be possible to remove the timing belt. Remove the protection on the right side, it is attached to the body with self-tapping screws. Place the crankshaft immediately on the mark on the flywheel. You can see it by removing the rubber plug on the clutch block.

Now loosen the alternator mounting nut and pull it closer to the engine to make it easier to remove the alternator belt. When we have loosened it, you can remove it and see if there are cracks and damage on it. If any, it is best to replace it. It doesn't matter if you have a multi-ribbed belt or a V-shaped one. And now the most difficult thing is to remove the pulley from the crankshaft.

Carbureted engines have pulleys with long windows. You can put a chisel or a wrench in them to abut against the engine block. And unscrew the bolt with a 19 socket wrench. But on injection ones it is more difficult, since there are no such windows. You will have to remove the rubber plug on the clutch block. Install a chisel or a large flathead screwdriver in the viewing window, rest it against the teeth of the crown.

When the pulley has been removed, you can proceed to remove the belt. To do this, loosen the tension roller, remove the belt from the pulley on the camshaft, and then on the crankshaft. That's it, now that you got rid of it, you can proceed with the installation. Try to change the pump, roller and timing belt together.

Installing the timing belt

First you need to set the crankshaft and camshafts according to the marks. As already mentioned, the crankshaft is aligned with the mark on the flywheel. When you remove the cover, you will see a metal strip with a cutout. This cutout should line up with the line on the flywheel housing.

After we proceed to the camshaft. On the engine, from the passenger compartment, there is a bar. And there is a mark on the pulley, which should clearly coincide with this bar on the engine. At the same time, assess the condition of the pulleys, whether they are worn out. If there is excessive wear, they must be replaced.

We take a new roller, install and bait the nut. Now we put on a new belt. First, on the crankshaft pulley, and then, slightly pulling, on the camshaft pulley. We also put on a pump and a roller. When the belt has been installed, we tighten it with a special wrench using a roller. Optimal tension is when the right side of the belt is rotated 90 degrees with little effort. The belt is tensioned, this completes its replacement.
