Maintenance-free batteries are not designed for handling: they have no holes for adding electrolyte. But this does not mean that they, in principle, do not need maintenance. The fact is that such batteries are designed to work in certain conditions, which are far from always feasible in our country. This means that the technique must be helped.

It is necessary

  • - awl or screwdriver,
  • - a syringe with a long needle,
  • - distilled water.

Instructions

Step 1

Look at the color of the battery indicator eye. If it is white, then the battery urgently needs help or even replacement. Turn off the ignition and lighting of the machine. Please note that this may erase data from radio, watches and other electronics. Protect against alarm failures.

To add electrolyte, tear off the sticker from the top battery cover. Use an awl to punch holes in the center of the soldered round caps. Another option is to use a screwdriver to pry off these plastic patches to expose the desired holes. Draw distilled water into a syringe, then slowly and gradually inject it into the inner chamber of the battery. When the electrolyte level reaches the required level, the indicator eye should turn black. Then add another 20 ml of distillate.

Step 2

If the color of the eye is black, then very little electrolyte is required. Make the same holes, but pour in only 5 ml of distilled water each time. You can check the sufficient level by reversing the syringe stem: if the distillate is sucked off with the minimum immersion of the needle, then the process can be completed.

Fill up the resulting holes. Fill the awl punctures with ordinary sealant. If you have drilled large holes, you can find suitable rubber plugs. For greater security, glue them along the entire circumference. Shake the battery and connect to the terminals of the charger.

Step 3

Maintenance-free batteries need regular maintenance. Store them in a temperature range of 0 to 27 ° C. Lubricate the terminals with special grease or petroleum jelly. Charge a battery that has been idle for a long time. This should be done every 3 months, otherwise it will lose performance. Certain battery models may not require recharging for a year. Check the drive belt tension to detect a decrease in battery power.
