During the development of the model range of the Volga Automobile Plant, several variants of the engines of the people's car "classics" have appeared. Among other things, motors differ in the type of timing mechanism (timing) drive. There are chain and belt drives. The chain is a little more noisy and gluttonous, but with proper care, it is much more durable than the belt one.

It is necessary

  • - key "10";
  • - a wrench for turning the crankshaft or a "36" head.

Instructions

Step 1

During operation, the chain links wear out, which leads to some of their elongation and a general elongation of the chain. Also, the chain tensioner is not permanently secured. All this leads to a loosening of the chain tension. A loose chain, in addition to noise, can quickly damage the tensioner shoe and damper. And a very weak chain can jump over the tooth of one of the gears (in theory, this is possible, and even cases are known) and severely disrupt the operation of the engine. Timely maintenance will help avoid quick repairs and unnecessary costs.

Step 2

It is recommended to check the chain tension, on average, at least once every 10,000 kilometers. The operation can be carried out without a viewing ditch. The chain can be adjusted both on a warm and cold engine.

Step 3

Park the vehicle on a level surface, turn off the engine and apply the parking brake. Shift into neutral and open the hood.

Step 4

Use the “10” head to unscrew the chain tensioner retaining cover. It is located on the side of the passenger seat, under the coolant pipe that enters the front of the cylinder head. Do not unscrew the tensioner cover at all, just release it a few turns.

Step 5

Turn the crankshaft 1 - 1, 5 turns in the direction of rotation with a special wrench or a "36" head. The crankshaft nut is located in the lower front part of the cylinder block, in the center of the lower V-belt drive wheel of the pump drive. Scrolling the shaft, you will set the timing chain in motion, and the released tensioner, under the action of its own spring, will automatically tension the chain to the required state.

Step 6

Tighten the chain tensioner retaining nut until it stops. Use a car.
