The frequency of engine oil change usually does not exceed 10 thousand kilometers. Therefore, for an experienced motorist, changing engine oil in a car is not difficult.

However, many vehicle owners do not even know that they can change the engine oil on their own.

We will need:

- a garage with a special pit or just a flat asphalt area and a jack, - work clothes, - a little rags, - a container for draining used oil (a basin or a plastic canister is suitable), - a set of open-end wrenches, - a tool for unscrewing the oil filter (or a flat screwdriver if there is no tool), - new engine oil, - a new oil filter, - O-ring for the drain plug.

Before changing the engine oil, you need to find out the brand of oil itself and need the volume. Typically, an engine with a volume of about 2 liters circulates no more than 4 liters of engine oil. It is also advisable to make sure in advance that access to the drain plug at the bottom of the engine crankcase is not blocked by anything. Otherwise, you will have to first remove the engine protection.

When changing the engine oil, the engine must not be hot, let it cool slightly. Otherwise, you could burn yourself with the drained engine oil.

If the engine oil is changed without a pit, then you will have to raise the front of the car with a jack.

To drain the used oil, place a previously prepared container under the drain plug, then slightly unscrew the plug so that the oil flows in a small stream. It can take up to 1 hour to completely drain the oil. By gradually unscrewing the plug, at the end it will be possible to completely remove it.

While the used oil is draining from the engine, you need to unscrew the oil filter. The best way to do this is to use a special tool that grips the filter and creates a kind of lever that makes it easier to unscrew the filter.

If such a tool is not available, you can try to unscrew the filter by hand, having previously cleaned the filter from dirt. If this does not help, then you can pierce the filter through with a strong flat screwdriver and, using it as a lever, unscrew the old filter.

When the engine oil has completely drained from the engine, it is necessary to unscrew the plug, if not done earlier, wipe it with a rag and replace the O-ring if necessary. This is to prevent new oil from leaking through the drain plug.

Then you need to install a new oil filter. First, it is necessary to wipe its seat with a rag, and grease the rubber ring on the filter with new oil. The filter should be screwed on tightly, but not too tight.

The final step is to fill in new engine oil through the filler neck in the engine valve cover. Usually this place is marked with a special sign. Engine oil must be filled in exactly as much as indicated in the instructions for the car.

After filling the oil, you need to lower the car from the jack, start the engine and let it run for about 10 minutes. During this time, it is necessary to carefully inspect the engine for oil leaks, if necessary, turn off the engine and tighten the drain plug and / or oil filter.
