Replacing the fuel pump does not happen very often, since this unit is quite reliable. But if the pump breaks down, the motorist will think about whether it is worth driving the car to the service. If you look at the scope of work, then it is not very large.

The gas pump in the car plays an important role. It supplies fuel from the tank to the injection system. When it comes to a carburetor engine, the pump supplies fuel to the carburetor. If about the injection, then - to the fuel rail and injectors. Replacing a gas pump with your own hands is a matter that is within the power of a person who represents the principle of the system. But if a person does not understand anything about the device of the car, then it is best to contact the service. It is also worth going to the service if the car is under warranty.

Carburetor engines

In this case, we can say right away that there can be no guarantee for a carburetor car. Cars with such a fuel injection system have not been produced for many years. The gasoline pump of the carburetor motor is driven by the engine. Either from the camshaft or from the oil pump. A diaphragm installed in the pump housing, together with the valves, ensures an even supply of fuel to the carburetor.

Pump replacement consists of several stages. First, you need to loosen the two clamps on the fuel hoses, then remove these hoses. Secondly, unscrew the two nuts with a wrench that screw the pump to the engine. Thirdly, remove the pump and install a new one in its place, connecting all hoses to it. There is not a lot of work, so you can do it yourself in a matter of minutes. There are no reasons for going to the service.

But here everything is a little more complicated. Look immediately for a warranty. If it has expired, then you need to assess the complexity of the work being done. First of all, you need to turn off the power to the electric pump and start the engine. It must use up all the fuel that is left in the rail and fuel line. Only after reducing the pressure in the system, you can start repairing or replacing the pump.

There is a tank under the rear seat, and in the body of the car, between the seat and the tank, there is a window, which is closed by a bar. Remove this plank for a great view of the pump. Now you need to disconnect the block with wires from it, as well as two tubes. Different vehicles have used different tube fixation methods. Some use plastic fittings, while others use tubing clamps.

And now it only remains to remove the ring securing the pump housing, or unscrew the fastening nuts. Depends on which fastening method is used in a particular vehicle. And the last thing is to remove the pump with the level sensor, and then install a new one. The procedure is quite simple, so it's easy to carry out it at home, you don't have to go to the service. If, of course, you do not want to get your hands dirty, you have little free time, but at the same time you are not constrained in finances, then give preference to a service where all the work will be done to you efficiently and on time.
