The bearings of the front wheel hub of a car are always subjected to enormous loads while driving, which are intensified many times when driving on a poor-quality road surface. For this reason, the front hub bearings wear out more often than other parts of the machine. Repair of the front hub bearing of the VAZ 2110 and similar models consists of constant inspection, regular lubrication and a complete replacement of the bearing in case of failure.

Bearing replacement methods

Replacing the front hub bearing of the VAZ 2110 can be done in one of three ways. The first is to replace the bearing using a special puller without dismantling the steering knuckle from the machine. The second is the replacement of the bearing with the dismantling of the steering knuckle using a puller and a vice. The third method is to completely remove the strut from the vehicle and replace the bearing in a vice. All described methods have their pros and cons.

When replacing the hub bearing in the first way, there is no need to loosen the camber adjustment bolt, which is a great advantage of this method. The main disadvantage is uncomfortable work, in which replacing a bearing without a special lift, overpass or inspection pit becomes quite problematic.

The second method makes bearing replacement an easier task, but there is a problem with camber misalignment. In order to avoid this violation, two marks must be made before unscrewing the steering knuckle bolts. One of them should show the location of the adjusting bolt relative to the rack, the other - the position of the steering knuckle. After replacing the bearing during the assembly process, the marks must match. It is unlikely that it will be possible to achieve the initial accuracy, but the error will also be small. This method is ideal for those who, in addition to the hub bearing, replace other elements of the car's chassis.

Of all the methods, the third is the most difficult. To dismantle the rack, you need to unpress the steering tip, unscrew the nuts that attach the upper support to the car body, after which the front hub bearing must be replaced on the dismantled rack. This method is more complicated than the others, but it is sometimes used when the two previous methods are not suitable for some reason.

Instructions for replacing the bearing using a puller and a vise

To begin with, put the car on the "handbrake" and turn on the first gear, and then, for safety reasons, insert stops under the rear wheels to prevent rollback. Then loosen the wheel bolts and hang the front of the vehicle (both front wheels). Unscrew the hub bearing nut using a 30 mm wrench.

If the car uses light-alloy wheels, you must first dismantle the wheel itself and invite an assistant who will keep the brake pedal pressed while the second person unscrews the hub nut. Using a screwdriver, try to squeeze the caliper, then use a 17 mm wrench to disconnect the caliper from the steering knuckle. Tie up the caliper so that it does not hang from the brake hose.

Then remove the brake disc from the front hub. After that, don't forget to include the labels. Unscrew the bolts securing the steering knuckle to the strut and knock them out using a soft tip. Remove the two bolts that secure the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle, then remove the latter.

Knock the hub out of the bearing with a set piece of the correct diameter. Remove the retaining ring. Install a special puller in a vice and start pressing out the bearing. After that it is necessary to clean and lubricate the bearing seat.

Then proceed to press in the hub bearing, put the retaining ring. Mount the steering knuckle with the new bearing on the hub and, using a mandrel of the required diameter, drive it in until it stops, and the force must be applied to the inner diameter of the bearing cage.

Further assembly must be carried out in the reverse order. After the hub bearing nut is tightened, you need to crush its side.
