The catalyst in the engine exhaust system is a hollow metal structure with a complex ceramic mesh structure inside it. By increasing the area of the contact surface through which the exhaust is produced, the fuel particles contained in it are oxidized and burned out. As a result, the amount of emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere is reduced.
Necessary
- - wrenches 13 and 17 mm,
- - a hammer,
- - chisel.
Instructions
Step 1
Due to the fact that the price of original catalysts in sales is quite high due to the content of precious metals, such as platinum, palladium, etc. in their ceramic honeycomb, then the owners, in case of failure of the specified element of the exhaust system, purchase non-original spare parts to replace it (they are much cheaper) or a flame arrester. The simplest option is to knock out the honeycomb from the afterburner.
Step 2
The reasons indicating a malfunction of the catalyst are:
- loss of motor power due to the difficult passage of gases through clogged honeycombs, - an extraneous rattling sound from the bottom of the car, created by pieces of broken off ceramics in the body of the device.
Step 3
After the appearance of these signs, the machine is placed on an inspection pit, overpass or lift. From the bottom of the car, the catalyst mount is untwisted, which, as a rule, is mounted in the system using flanges or crimping clamps.
Step 4
Having freed an element of the exhaust system, it is removed from under the machine, and the state of the ceramic honeycomb is inspected on a locksmith's workbench. If they are clogged or melted, then the ceramic is completely knocked out of the body with a hammer and chisel.
