The technology of self-gluing glass assumes the use of the correct tool, compliance with all stages and operations, care and accuracy during work. If you are gluing glass for the first time, purchase all materials and tools in the kit and refrain from using third-party components.
It is necessary
- - a faceted string or a special cutting knife for cutting the sealant;
- - retractable knife with replaceable blades;
- - degreasing agent;
- - a sealant for gluing glasses and a primer for it;
- - scotch tape;
- - activator;
- - pneumatic gun for sealant;
- - new glass
Instructions
Step 1
Thread a string or knife between the inside and outside of the glass and cut the sealant holding the glass. In doing so, try not to damage the dashboard. Be extremely careful in this place! After cutting out the old glass, use the retractable knife to remove the old sealant from the opening. When removing the windshield, cut off the rubber molding that fits around the perimeter.
Step 2
Check all purchased supplies and tools. Be sure to read the sealant manufacturer's technical documentation. The glass to be glued must be accompanied by a rubber capsule that is put on its perimeter. Try on glass with an elastic band on the place of pasting to avoid unpleasant surprises. Mark the borders of the pasting with a marker. Depending on the make and model of the car, there may be special adjustable windshield stops or guides. With them, success is almost guaranteed.
Step 3
Place something soft on the hood to use it as a glass support and not damage it. Place the glass face down on the bonnet. Degrease the bonding site with an anti-silicone or any other compound. Apply the primer in one layer with a wide strip at the place of application of the sealant. To do this, use a wide brush or a special swab that comes with the glass bonding kit. Apply the primer only to areas free from the remnants of old sealant.
Step 4
Apply primer to new glass where it comes into contact with the sealant. Usually this place is painted with black silk-screen printing. This is necessary to protect the glass sealant from the damaging ultraviolet radiation. Treat the remains of the old sealant with an activator.
Step 5
To apply the new sealant, use only the glass bonding kit product with the correct tip shape. Use a good air gun with a compressor to squeeze out the sealant. A hand gun or a Chinese pistol will not work. Before applying the sealant, slightly heat it up to 30-40 degrees. The strip of applied glue should be even, without breaks and bulges on the body.
Step 6
Carefully attach the glass and align with the marks previously applied during fitting. Carefully begin to press down on the glass, adjusting it to the desired angle and gaps. Avoid applying strong pressure to prevent the sealant from protruding from the seats. If this happens, do not wash the product that has come out. After it dries, cut with a knife or peel off with foil.
Step 7
Fix the installed glass with tape so as to exclude the slightest movement. In this case, the tape is glued first to the glass, then to the body, attracting it. Do not slam the car doors while drying the sealant. To speed up drying, increase the room temperature by turning on the heater.
