Usually, the replacement of the universal joint of the cardan transmission is carried out after the occurrence of metal "clicks" when starting the car from a place, also in the case of detection of its backlash. In this case, two crosses should be replaced at once, even if the second does not need to be replaced. This operation is simple and you can do it yourself.

Necessary

  • - mandrels for pressing and extrusion of the needle bearing caps of the crosspiece;
  • - a hammer;
  • - brush for metal;
  • - screwdriver;
  • - round-nose pliers;
  • - "blue" grease.

Instructions

Step 1

Place the vehicle on a viewing ditch or lift. Remove the propeller shaft and clean thoroughly the parts of the propeller joints from dirt and oil. Take a screwdriver and mark the location of the gimbal forks. This must be done, since the cardan shafts are balanced at the factory during assembly. When carrying out subsequent assemblies, it is necessary to maintain the previous mutual arrangement of the parts, otherwise vibrations will occur when the car is moving.

Step 2

Take a hammer and lightly hit the needle bearing cups inside the forks so that you can get the circlips. Use round nose pliers to squeeze the ends of the retaining ring together. Using a screwdriver, remove it from the gimbal. Remove the rest of the retaining rings in the same way.

Step 3

Place a hollow stop under the universal joint yoke lug. Install a mandrel onto the bearing sleeve. Take a hammer and press out the bearing with light blows on it. Rotate the propeller shaft 180 degrees and press out the next needle bearing cup by lightly hitting the cross journal through the mandrel.

Step 4

Remove the flange yoke. Remove the bearing mechanical seal. Press out the remaining bearings and remove the universal joint of the propeller shaft. Disassemble the second hinge in the same way.

Step 5

Install the new cross in the reverse order, aligning the marks that were applied before disassembly, lubricating the needle bearings with "blue" grease. Position the crosspieces and forks of the hinges so that the grease fittings of the crosspiece and sliding fork are on the same side of the shaft and in the same plane. The spider grease nipple on the other end of the shaft should be offset 90 degrees to the left in the direction of travel. Check the ease of movement of the forks after the end of the assembly of the universal joints, they should not have jamming and backlash.
