When, while driving in a car with front-wheel drive, during a sharp turn, which requires maximum turning of the steering wheel, a crack is heard from the front hub, the appearance of such a sound indicates an imminent failure of the constant velocity joint.

Necessary

  • - jack,
  • - rigid support,
  • - hub wrench,
  • - a hammer,
  • - 19 mm spanner.

Instructions

Step 1

Dismantling and replacement of a faulty CV joint with a new unit is carried out in the garage, on a flat floor surface. To this end, in the course of preliminary preparation for repair, all four bolts on the wheel are loosened, as well as the nut that secures the hub bearing.

Step 2

Then the car is lifted on a jack, the wheel is removed from it, and the front part of the body is securely installed on a rigid support. After that, the wheel bearing fastening nut is finally unscrewed.

Step 3

At the next stage of the refurbishment, the fastenings of the ball joint and the tie rod end are disconnected from the rack with a 19 mm wrench. Grasping the brake disc with your hands, the hub is jerked out of engagement with the spline tip of the drive shaft.

Step 4

Taking the rack to the side, and fixing it there so as not to interfere with further actions, with one hand, grasping the drive shaft, and with the other, armed with a hammer and tapping it on the shaft, it is removed from the gearbox gear.

Step 5

Having placed the shaft on a workbench, and holding it in a vice, the failed CV joint is replaced with a new unit, and the shaft assembled with a new hinge is installed at its workplace (one end in the gearbox, and the spline part of the front hub is put on the other). All further steps for assembling the machine are performed in reverse order.
