To ensure trouble-free operation of the hydraulic cylinder, constant monitoring of the quality and quantity of its working fluid is required. The quality of the oil is checked by visual inspection, and the quantity is checked by measuring the level of the liquid in the reservoir. The oil level is controlled using a dipstick or a scale applied to one of the walls of the tank.
Power steering is used to enhance the control actions carried out by a person while driving a car. The working medium of the hydraulic booster is oil located in a special reservoir. From the tank, the oil flows through the pipes into the working cavity of the transfer pump and returns to the tank after the end of the cycle. Checking the oil in the power steering is to control its quality and quantity. This operation does not require the help of professionals and can be done by the car owner with his own hands.
Oil quality check
To check the quality of the oil, you need to open the tank cap located in its upper part. Checking the quality of the oil must be carried out from the beginning of the operation of the car in order to detect in time a change in its color and consistency compared to the normal state. The oil in the reservoir must be homogeneous and free of suspended solids or impurities. If the fluid visually does not correspond to its normal state or if there is a burning smell, the oil must be replaced.
Checking the amount of oil
The correspondence of the amount of oil to the nominal value is checked by its level. The nominal level is indicated in the range from the minimum to the maximum value. The liquid level is measured using a special measuring probe or a scale of divisions applied to one of the walls of the tank. When measuring with a probe, it is recommended to wipe its surface with a rag before starting the measurement.
There are plastic and metal tanks. The plastic tanks are translucent and allow you to control the oil level without removing the cap. Opening such a tank is necessary to control the quality of the fluid. The probe is equipped with metal tanks, the advantages of which are high strength and durability. After completing the check, the tank must be tightly closed with a lid.
If the oil level is below the permissible mark, the fluid should be topped up to the required value. A significant drop in the oil level during regular periodic checks indicates a leakage of the reservoir. In this case, it is recommended to replace the tank.
Oil test conditions
To check the oil level correctly, the vehicle must be parked on a level surface. The check should be carried out with the engine cooled down so that the oil temperature does not rise above 50 ° C during the measurement.
