Almost all modern diesel engines are equipped with turbines. Naturally aspirated diesel (naturally aspirated) is a rarity these days. Therefore, the happy owners of diesel cars periodically face the question: how to repair it on their own? For any repair, diagnostics or cleaning of the turbine, it must be disassembled.

It is necessary

  • - a set of automotive tools;
  • - new gaskets;

Instructions

Step 1

Stock up on a good set of automotive tools and enough free time - removing and disassembling a turbine in time takes a lot of time. If the skills of auto repair are not available, invite an assistant with practical experience in this matter. Disconnect the battery by removing the wires from its terminals. Drain the engine coolant and engine oil. Remove all parts that prevent easy access to the turbine.

Step 2

Remove the turbine from the exhaust manifold. To do this, first dismantle the air hoses that go from it to the air filter and intercooler. If the vehicle has an exhaust gas modulator, turn off its vacuum switch just before removing the exhaust manifold hose. After that, remove the protective cover, disconnect the oil and coolant inlet / outlet pipes, unscrew the fastening nuts at the manifold and outlet. Then it will be possible to remove the turbine from the engine compartment, if other parts do not interfere with this. Some turbine models are easier to remove together with the exhaust manifold. To do this, unscrew all the bolts of its fastening and remove the turbine with the manifold from below, from the inspection pit.

Step 3

Wash and clean the turbine housing from dirt. Use an alcohol marker to mark the relative position of the parts. Start disassembly from the part where the exhaust gases enter. Using a suitable wrench, unscrew the bolts securing the "volute", then remove the control rod from the adjusting ring drive. Then, gently tapping the snail body with a wooden mallet, remove it.

Step 4

Inspect the inside of the adjusting ring. Soak the soot on its surface for an hour in diesel fuel, and then clean it with compressed air. After removing the "snail", access to the "hot" impeller will open. To remove it, unscrew the thread on its shaft counterclockwise. For convenience, clamp the hot end of the shaft in a vise. It is designed as a star nut. Unscrew the "cold" impeller in the same way. Remove the shafts of both impellers with light hammer blows. Clean the shaft seals in the form of spring rings of coke, carbon deposits and soot. These rings have protective washers - remember to wear them when assembling.

Step 5

When assembling and installing the turbine, install new gaskets between the turbine and the exhaust manifold. Place all connections on a high-quality sealant. At the same time, try not to overdo it, as the pressure in the turbine will squeeze out excess sealant into the oil channels, which will lead to oil starvation of the unit. Pay attention to the body nuts - they must be tightened with a certain tightening torque, and then tightened until the marks are aligned.
