Situations when your car may be left without numbers do not happen often. For example, this can happen when buying a new car, when you have not yet had time to register it with the traffic police, or these numbers were simply twisted from you. A reasonable question arises: how long can you drive a car without numbers?
Driving without license plates on a new car
Despite the fact that each vehicle must have its own license plate, it is still possible to drive a new car without transit signs and numbers. At the same time, you can only have a sales contract, a vehicle passport, as well as insurance, which can be issued without even having numbers.
The new administrative regulation prescribing the registration of vehicles, which came into force in October 2013, no longer prescribes the issuance of transits per vehicle. According to this regulation, you are required to register a car with any traffic police within ten days, regardless of where you live.
If you did not manage to register the vehicle within the allotted time, then the traffic police inspector who stopped you may charge a fine for this offense in the amount of 500-800 rubles. In case of a repeated violation, the amount will already be at least 5,000 rubles, or you will be deprived of the right to drive a car for up to 3 months.
Driving without numbers on a previously registered vehicle
If your car has already been previously registered in accordance with all the rules, but at the moment there are no state license plates for a number of reasons (lost, stolen, a sign with the inscription "Newlyweds" is placed on top of them, etc.), the traffic police inspector has every right to fine you under Article 12.2 under the Code of Administrative Offenses for 5,000 rubles, or send the case to court to deprive you of the management of funds for up to 3 months.
In the case of selling a car to another owner, you need to make sure that he has timely registered the vehicle for himself within ten days. Otherwise, the car will still be registered with you, and all fines may come to your name. In such a situation, you need to immediately write a statement to the traffic police to terminate the registration of your car, attaching a copy of the sales contract.
You can also write an application to search for your former car. As practice shows, after such statements, the unscrupulous new owner of the vehicle will very quickly show up with requests to go with him to the traffic police and register the car for him, because without your participation, he will not be able to do this.
Driving a car without insurance
Knowing about possible indulgences with the terms of vehicle registration, some newly minted drivers think that they can drive for a while without insurance, too. However, it is strictly forbidden to drive without insurance, you cannot even leave a car dealership without it.
