Step 1

Check the plug connections on the switch and ignition distributor, if suddenly the car starts to twitch, the engine runs intermittently, and the tachometer needle starts to move erratically. Very often the contacts become dirty and oily, which is why the switch does not receive all signals from the Hall sensor. Flushing with a solvent, penetrating lubricant will help get rid of such a nuisance. You can even wipe the contacts with a damp cloth.

Step 2

Check thoroughly if the car won't start at all. It is best to use emergency ignition devices for testing. These are small blocks that simulate the operation of a Hall sensor and a switch. Checking the Hall sensor is the very first step. If there is no simulator, then it is necessary to connect an armored wire with a tip and a candle to the high-voltage output of the coil.

Step 3

Short the green wire to ground with the ignition on. At the moment of opening, a spark should slip on the candle. If a spark appears when opening, but when the engine is cranked by the starter, it is not, then the Hall sensor is faulty or its wires are cut off. You can also take a test lamp and connect it between 6 and 3 pins of the switch. With a slow rotation of the crankshaft, the lamp should gradually light up and gradually go out.

Step 4

Check the switch with a diagnostic device. If not, then use a test lamp. The light bulb must be up to 3 watts, operating voltage 12 volts. Connect one terminal of the lamp to ground, and connect the second to the first terminal of the switch. This is the lead from which the brown wire goes to the ignition coil. If voltage is applied to the coil, and when the green wire of the sensor is shorted to ground, there is a spark at the output of the coil, then the malfunction lies in the distributor.

Step 5

Remove the ignition distributor cover. Examine it carefully for damage. A crack in the cover body can cause a large current leakage, which will not have enough spark power, it will not reach the spark plug electrodes. Also inspect the contacts, if they are dirty, then clean them. There is a resistor on the slider, which can also fail, as a result of this there will be no spark on the candles. You need to check the resistor with an ohmmeter. The resistance of the resistor should be about 5 kΩ. If it differs significantly from this number, then you will have to change the distributor slider.
