It so happens that you need to go somewhere, and the starter does not want to turn the engine of your car. The cause may not be too serious and you can often fix the problem yourself. This is especially true for beginners who have just got behind the wheel and have not yet adapted to the automotive life.

Step 1
You can check the VAZ starter in several ways:
Lock the two largest terminals on the starter with a wrench or screwdriver. If, when closing, the contacts spark, and the starter does not work, then proceed with the following methods:
- The terminals on the battery may have oxidized. Simply peel them off with either a sandpaper or a knife.
- Try replacing the starter relay.
- Check the wire that goes to the starter relay. The terminal for this wire is located at the bottom of the starter, and it can be invisible from above.
Step 2
When the starter terminals are closed, it turns, but slowly.
- The battery has run out. Change the battery or put it on charge. Half an hour of charging is enough to start the car.
- Broken contacts in the starter power supply circuits. Check the integrity of all wires that go to it.
Step 3
When trying to start the car, characteristic clicks are heard.
- The battery has run out. Replace or charge it.
- Loose contacts of wires going to the starter. Check all connections and tighten if necessary.
- If these measures did not help, change the solenoid relay.
Step 4
After the car has started, the starter continues to work. In this case, immediately turn off the engine and turn off the ignition.
- Change the solenoid relay. Most likely, the contacts inside it stuck together.
Step 5
Also, in all cases, check the ignition switch. It is necessary in turn to clean all the contacts going to the lock. At the same time, do not break the sequence of their connection.
In most cases, such actions allow you to check the VAZ starter. But sometimes it is still better to use the service of specialists who will check at a special stand and give out the true cause of the malfunction. Also have a working starter and a charged battery in stock. Although it is trite, it will avoid many problems.
