Internal tuning is aimed at improving the technical characteristics of the car and increasing comfort. The interior is improved by changing its upholstery to a more expensive one - velor, suede or leather, additionally insulated, equipped with cigarette lighters, ashtrays and other useful little things. Replacing the engine with a more modern one or from another car is considered as a deeper tuning. The ZMZ-406 engine is implanted in the GAZ-21 together with a 5-speed gearbox, in the Zaporozhets or LUAZ - the engine from the VAZ-2108, in the UAZ - the 8-cylinder gasoline engine from the PAZik. But most often imported engines are installed together with automatic transmissions, more powerful and more reliable. A more powerful motor requires reworking the brakes so that the vehicle can be stopped at high speed. For this, standard drum mechanisms are replaced with modern ventilated discs. The suspension is tuned. To give the car a sporty look, the ride height is reduced by installing shorter and stiffer springs. If you need to increase the lifting capacity of the suspension, it is reinforced with stiffer springs, additional springs, more powerful shock absorbers. The suspension of SUVs is lifted - the ground clearance is significantly increased by installing additional gaskets and replacing shock absorbers.

Interest in tuning domestic cars was high in Soviet times, when the consumer bought what he would get, not what he needed. Interest in tuning Russian cars grew even more in the 90s, when it was easier to invest in tuning a domestic car than in buying a new foreign car. Since the beginning of the 2000s, when many affordable imported cars appeared on the market, tuning of domestic cars has become less relevant.
