A hardware switch (KVM switch, for "keyboard, video, mouse") allows you to connect one set of keyboard, monitor and mouse to two or three computers. This allows you to save desk space and use one machine while the other is performing a resource-intensive task.
Instructions
Step 1
Calculate the total power consumed by two or three computers. Convert it to watts and divide by the line voltage, expressed in volts. This is the current draw - install a wall outlet and extension cord that can handle this current. But while connecting computers to a keyboard, monitor and mouse through a hardware switch, be sure to de-energize all equipment without exception. The extension cord must be equipped with grounding contacts so that the cases of all devices are connected to each other, and the socket must be properly grounded.
Step 2
Please note that most KVM switches will only work with PS / 2 keyboards and mice and VGA monitors. Make sure the monitor has the correct input, and install video cards with the appropriate outputs in all machines. Provide a keyboard and mouse of the required standard if you have not already done so.
Step 3
Use the cables supplied with the hardware switch to connect the keyboard, monitor, and mouse connectors on your computers to the corresponding input jacks on the switch. To facilitate the work, they are in most cases marked with the following colors: keyboard - lilac, mouse - light green, monitor - dark blue. Tighten the screws for the monitor connectors. Then connect the keyboard, monitor, and mouse to the KVM switch outputs in the same way.
Step 4
Turn on the monitor and either both computers or just the one you intend to work with. In the future, select a computer by turning the massive galet switch installed on the device. Rotate it quickly so as not to avoid impulse noise on the contacts, but not abruptly to prevent wear of the switch itself. Don't switch between computers too often.
Step 5
Some modern KVM switches switch signals electronically. For such a device, allocate another outlet or socket in the extension cord so that you can connect the supplied power supply. Turn the switch on before turning on the computer and monitor, and turn it off last. Select a computer by lightly pressing the key with its number.
