The hub is one of the most important parts of any bike model. The efficiency of the transport depends on the quality of this element, which is important for the cyclist himself, who spends his own strength when riding. At the same time, the front hub has a simpler design than the rear one, since it has to withstand heavy loads. Therefore, the rear hub needs to be repaired more frequently.

Instructions

Step 1

When assembling the rear hub, it must be borne in mind that the right and left ends of the axle are different. The right one is fixed to the axle by means of a lock nut, after which it is never removed from it. Therefore, all adjustments are made with the left cone. Do not confuse which side of the hub you will need to insert the axle with the right taper.

Step 2

Place new, thick grease in the bushing housing and in the bearing cups on both sides, then take the balls with tweezers and press them into it. The lubricant must be thick enough to prevent the balls from rolling out of the bushing.

Step 3

On the right side of the rear hub, place a washer over the balls and insert the axle with the right taper. This should be done carefully. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing balls, which can fall out of the bearing cup from the opposite side.

Step 4

Screw the left cone onto the axle, but under no circumstances tighten it. Then put on the washers and screw on the lock nut.

Step 5

Now you need to adjust the bearings. To do this, ensure that the axle is stationary. Get someone to help you keep the right cone from turning while you adjust the left cone. If no assistant is available, clamp the right cone locknut in a vise, but do so carefully so as not to deform the nut and bushing.

Step 6

Using a cone wrench, screw in the left cone until it stops, but without tightening it, but letting it go 45 degrees. After that, while holding the cone with the wrench, tighten the lock nut. All this time the hub axis must remain stationary.

Step 7

If everything is done correctly, the axle will rotate easily, without any jamming. Moreover, it should not have a large backlash. If any play or binding is found, unscrew the locknut and tighten or loosen the cone.

Step 8

At the end of the adjustment, put on the boots and check the rotation of the wheel, which should turn without any effort only under the influence of the weight of the nipple.
