The lightening of the connecting rods allows you to increase the acceleration of the car, reduce fuel consumption, finish off high engine speeds for a long time and reduce the pressure on the piston itself. So how do you lighten the connecting rod to achieve all of this?

Instructions

Step 1

Select factory cranks with minimal weight differences. Remember that the connecting rods are processed by a turner on a special machine, as this is a very “jewelry” work that requires great precision and care.

Step 2

Fasten the first connecting rod to the lathe tooling and carefully, without unnecessary movements, grind the lower head on the sides, observing the symmetry of the rotation axes. By this action, you remove excess metal, due to which excess heat is removed. Weigh the connecting rod on an electronic scale with an accuracy of at least 0.5 g. Do the same with the other three connecting rods and do not forget that they all fit under the first connecting rod and should be almost the same in weight, only 0.1 gram differences are allowed.

Step 3

Attach the connecting rod and start working on the bottom of its cap. Then you need to check it for a suspension support. Observe the main rule - do not cut off anything unnecessary at the base and head of the connecting rod. With such a phased lightening, they are adjusted in weight and the center of mass of the connecting rod itself is preserved, which preserves the same moments of inertia.

Step 4

Start machining the upper head, but do not forget that after each operation they must be weighed and adjusted to the first connecting rod with a minimum weight. Remember not to touch the center section so as not to weaken the connecting rod itself. But for a conventional motor, you can make an exception and grind it, then the weight will decrease to 700 grams, ideally.

Step 5

By lightening the connecting rods, a change in the weight of the lower head of about 110 grams can be achieved. But be careful: you should not remove the metal from the leg, since it is affected by the forces of compression and rupture with each revolution of the crankshaft, reaching 10 tons.
