There are many options for gearboxes: manual, automatic, robotic, variator. And each option has its own indisputable advantages and disadvantages, which you need to know so that, having chosen a gearbox, then you do not regret it.
Instructions
Step 1
The manual transmission is simple, cheap, reliable, and can be repaired in the garage. Economy cars, trucks, tractors and some sports cars are equipped with manual gearboxes. Unlike the classic automatic machine, the mechanics allows you to tow the car, brake with the engine, get out of the mud "jumping", allows long-term slipping of the driving wheels. On the other hand, such a box is more difficult to learn and tires the driver in city traffic, especially in traffic jams.
Step 2
An automatic transmission is much more comfortable than a manual one. Once having traveled on the machine, few change back to mechanics. In addition, modern machines are gradually getting rid of their shortcomings. There is increased fuel consumption, but not more than 10-15%. The reliability of an automatic transmission depends on its proper operation, and not on design features. The latest models of automatic machines can brake with the engine, have a manual gear change function and select a driving mode: economical, sports or winter.
Step 3
The variator can also be classified as an automatic transmission. Unlike a classic machine, the variator smoothly changes the torque from the engine. Therefore, acceleration occurs without jerking and jerking, like on a trolleybus or electric car. A good CVT is much more economical than all other transmissions. The disadvantage is that the CVT does not tolerate high loads, so it can be seen on scooters and city cars with not very powerful engines. In addition, the variator belt wears out rather quickly and requires frequent replacement.
Step 4
A robotic transmission is essentially a conventional manual transmission with an automatic clutch and automatic gear shifting. Compared to a classic automatic machine, the robot is not as expensive and consumes fuel like a manual gearbox. Disadvantages - obvious jerking of the car when starting off, when switching in automatic mode, inability to slip when leaving a snowdrift, increased overheating of mechanisms when stopping with a gear engaged. Robotic gearboxes with shift paddles are often found on sports cars, as they allow you to accelerate faster than any other gearbox.
Step 5
The preselective gearbox (DSG) is a more advanced robotic gearbox, which is designed as two gearboxes combined into one unit. One box includes even gears, the other includes odd gears. This principle of operation allows you to switch speeds so quickly that the smoothness of acceleration is not inferior to the variator. Various jerking when starting and accelerating are completely excluded. The only drawback is the complexity of the mechanism, resulting in its high cost and high repair costs.
