Normal vehicle operation is impossible without a well-functioning starting system. When adjusting the electric start system of a car engine, it is necessary to observe the correct connection of the battery to the circuit containing the starter and the traction relay. Connecting a relay to a starter and adjusting it requires deliberate and unhurried action.

Necessary

  • - elements of the engine starting system;
  • - accumulator battery;
  • - probe.

Instructions

Step 1

Understand for yourself the composition of the electric engine start system and the features of its functioning. The device includes a battery, a starter, a traction relay, ignition switches and starter interlocks, connecting wires. When the ignition key is turned, the current from the battery goes to the winding of the starter traction relay. The relay armature and freewheel drive lever are displaced, and the drive gear is connected to the flywheel ring gear. This leads to the closing of the contacts and the inclusion of the starter motor.

Step 2

To adjust the gap between the gear end and the stop, disconnect the field winding wire from the traction relay terminal marked with the letter “M”. Connect a 12V battery to the “S” and “M” terminals. In this case, the drive gear should move to the meshing position. Using a feeler gauge, check the gap between the stop and the end of the gear. Adjust if necessary by installing / removing a gasket between the relay and the drive end cover

Step 3

To check the pull-in winding of the relay, connect the components of the circuit to the starter as shown in the figure. In this case, the field winding wire must be disconnected from the terminal marked with the letter “M”. The battery is connected to the required terminals in the same way as in the previous description. The gearwheel will move to the engagement position when the retractor winding of the relay is in good condition

Step 4

To check the holding winding of the traction relay, connect one battery terminal to the “S” terminal, the other to “ground”. Disconnect the field winding wire from the “M” terminal of the traction relay. Check if the relay is working properly. If the pinion is repeatedly extended and returned, this indicates an open circuit in the hold winding. Replace the traction relay.
