A semiconductor diode is used in those parts of an electrical circuit through which it is necessary to pass current in only one direction, excluding its reverse passage. Consequently, a failed diode either does not pass current through itself at all, or passes it in both directions. Which is completely unacceptable in the normal operation of a car generator, the design of which includes a diode bridge.

Step 1
In cases of malfunctions associated with the generation of a charging current by the generator, the diagnostics check, among other things, the functioning of the diode bridge.
Step 2
You can perform the specified check without removing the generator, it is enough to disconnect the power supply to the on-board network from the battery.
Step 3
Checking the diodes for a short circuit begins with applying voltage using a piece of wire connected at one end to the positive terminal of the battery, and the other to the generator, to terminal "30". The control lamp turns on between the generator case and the "negative" terminal of the battery.
Step 4
If the control lamp lights up, then this indicates a short circuit of the diodes, therefore, the generator must be removed from the engine to carry out refurbishment, which boils down to replacing the diodes individually, or the diode bridge as a whole.
