Often people need to know how long it will take to move from one place to another. It can be a trip to another part of the city or to another country. Let's figure out how to do this.

How to calculate travel time

It is necessary

  • - map;
  • - reference book of highways;
  • - GoogleMaps;
  • - GPS navigator.

Instructions

Step 1

Before calculating travel times, determine the distance to your destination using Google Earth (GoogleMaps). Use the ruler tool to draw a route - get the exact distance to the end point. This value is usually denoted by the letter s. In addition to GoogleMaps, the distance can be calculated on a map or using a road reference book.

Step 2

Find out the average travel speed v. This value depends on how you plan to move. For example, the average speed of movement by car in the city is 40-60 km / h, outside the city - 90-120 km / h. If you are walking, then take the speed of movement equal to 4-6 km / h, or about 1.5 m / s.

Step 3

When the path and speed are found, you can start calculating the travel time. To do this, use the formula: t = s / v, where t is the required time, and s and v are the values found above.

Step 4

It is worth noting that before dividing, the dimension of the quantities must be reduced to one unit of measurement. If your path is in meters, then take the speed in meters per second. And vice versa, if you know the path in kilometers, then take the speed in kilometers per hour. In the first case, you get the time in seconds, and in the second - in hours. For example, let us find the driving time if the distance between the houses of two acquaintances is known: s = 2500 meters, while the car travels from one house to another along the lanes at a speed of v = 36 km / h. First, convert the speed in m / s: 36/3, 6 = 10 m / s. Perform calculations using the formula: t = s / v = 2500/10 = 250 seconds. As you can see, the travel time is just over 4 minutes.

Step 5

As you can see, this method is rather complicated, and its accuracy is not very high, since the speed is taken "by eye". But if you have a GPS navigator (as a separate device or built-in function in your phone), then you can significantly improve the accuracy of calculations.

Step 6

Take a GPS device, set a route on the map. The program will immediately pave the route and display it on the map, indicating the distance. Start moving along the route - on foot or by transport. The navigator will analyze your speed and automatically calculate the planned travel time. At the end of your journey, go to the summary information section and see the exact time you spent driving.
