The car region code is a kind of identification mark that makes it possible to understand where a given car is registered. Now such signs will be assigned to the cars of the residents of Crimea.
The Republic of Crimea officially became part of the Russian Federation in March 2014: on the 21st, a special Federal Constitutional Law No. 6-FKZ “On the Admission of the Republic of Crimea to the Russian Federation and the Formation of New Subjects within the Russian Federation - the Republic of Crimea and the Federal City of Sevastopol”.
Car codes in Russia
Automotive codes of regions in Russia are assigned in a single number to each constituent entity of the Federation: thus, using this code, you can uniquely identify the territory where this vehicle is registered. This type of license plate was introduced in our country in 1994. At that time, the Russian Federation included 89 constituent entities of the Federation, each of which was assigned a code corresponding to the ordinal number of the territory in the general list of constituent entities of the Russian Federation.
Subsequently, the alignment in this area changed periodically. So, firstly, the number of subjects of the Federation changed: for example, in 2007, the Chita Region and the Aginsky Buryat Autonomous Okrug were merged into the Trans-Baikal Territory. Secondly, in large constituent entities of the Federation, the numbering capacity of codes was gradually depleted: for example, the Novosibirsk and Chelyabinsk regions faced such a situation, where, in addition to the originally assigned codes 54 and 74, codes 154 and 174, respectively, were introduced.
Choosing a region code for Crimea
As a result, the initial picture of the ownership of car codes in Russia was gradually changing, and in addition to the originally formed two-digit codes, three-digit codes were added more and more intensively. However, one two-digit code was never used in license plates in the Russian Federation and was in the reserve of the traffic police: it comes from code 92. However, after lengthy meetings, it was assigned to a federal city - Sevastopol, which became part of the Russian Federation at the same time as Crimea.
For car owners of Crimea, another two-digit code was allocated - 82. At that time, it was actually free. This was due to the fact that initially this code was assigned to a vehicle registered in the Koryak Autonomous Okrug. However, in 2005, this territory was merged with the Kamchatka region, as a result of which the Kamchatka Territory was formed, which has a common automobile code - 41. Thus, the code 82 was temporarily vacant and, after appropriate discussions, was assigned to the Republic of Crimea.
At the same time, when registering vehicles in Crimea, the traffic police will exclude numbers with this code, which have already been issued in the Koryak Autonomous Okrug. Thus, the situation when two cars with absolutely identical numbers will drive around the country becomes impossible.
