A coilover is a shock absorber with a spring assembly, with the ability to adjust the shock absorber in terms of stiffness and spring in height. Springs are made in the form of coils, which allows them to expand and contract. Coilovers allow the spring to be compressed against the strut, and the coilover damper, in turn, can be configured with or without stiffness adjustment.
There are two types of coilovers. The first allows you to install a screw thread and a custom spring on your old rack. The main problem of this type is that, by changing the vehicle's clearance, the standard shock absorber may not cope with the car's suspension (which will negatively affect the handling).
The second type changes the entire rack assembly. In the manufacture of such coilovers, the thread is applied to the body of the strut itself, this method is more common for lowering the car. The advantage of this method is the ability to change the vehicle's ground clearance without disassembling the entire suspension.
The maximum underestimation of the vehicle will depend on the brand of the coilovers themselves and on the vehicle itself. Most coilovers can lower the vehicle by 20-25 mm from the highest position. The range of clearance adjustment is mainly from 20 mm to 100 mm, although many car owners underestimate the car in the region of 25-50 mm.
If the car owner prepares his car for shows and exhibitions, then he lowers his car as much as possible. Coilovers also allow you to understate your car more than necessary.
There is a type of coilover that allows you to lift your car, but this is for something completely different. Coilovers will help you land any vehicle. If a motorist wants to buy coilovers, they usually mean a kit with shock absorbers. This kit is the most complete and expensive.
The kit itself is often directly dependent on the car itself. On some vehicles, they are supplied with support bearings or top mountings. This means that you will not be using old parts when installing coilovers. Also, the kits sometimes come with new striker fists, specially designed for the "landing" of the car.
There are also special kits, for example, for drag racing, only two front coilovers are produced separately. And there are also separate springs without shock absorbers.
