The quality and scope of problems that arise during the operation of any engine depend on the time and conditions of its operation. To get by with a medium repair, you need to diagnose engine wear in time.

Car, ignition key
Instructions
Step 1
Start the engine and shut it off immediately by returning the ignition key to the off position. And immediately turn the ignition key to the "start" position, but do not start the engine. Watch the oil pressure light. The more the unit is worn out, the faster it will light up. In such a situation, the light should start glowing after 5 seconds. If less time has passed, the engine needs a thorough inspection.
Step 2
Investigate the condition of the engine fluids. Start the car and, with the engine cold, immediately remove the expansion tank cap. If air bubbles float in the coolant, the cylinder head gasket is leaking and must be replaced.
Step 3
Open the oil filler cap on a cold, freshly started engine. If gas formation is observed in the oil, this may indicate the extreme wear of the piston rings. Confirm this problem with a well-warmed engine. Ask someone to press hard on the accelerator. At this point, put your hand to the exhaust pipe. If oil stains remain on the palm of your hand, the piston rings that serve as a seal are worn out.
Step 4
If the consumption of engine oil exceeds 1 liter per 1000 km, be aware that the parts of the engine cylinders and pistons are badly worn out. Note that if the exhaust gases are gray and the compression is reduced, this indicates the same problem. However, a decrease in compression and high oil consumption may mean that the valve caps are no longer elastic, and that coke deposits have appeared in the piston rings, and that the valves themselves have burnt out.
Step 5
Listen to the engine running. If you hear a knock, contact a specialist. Find out the origin of the knock in the engine in a car workshop, where the engine will be listened to with a stethoscope and the pressure in the lubrication system will be checked with a pressure gauge. These factors sometimes mean that the crankshaft parts are excessively worn.
Step 6
If you find some of the above problems in your car, contact a car service as soon as possible for troubleshooting. There, the compression of the engine is measured with a compression meter. With the help of a pneumotester, the cause of its decrease will be determined. Using a special device, the surfaces of the cylinders will be inspected. Measure the wear of the crankshaft journals and cylinders using a micrometer or measuring bracket, dial gauge and bore gauge.
