On gasoline engines, the engine is shut off by turning off the ignition system. There are no ignition systems on diesel engines, so they are muffled in a different way. And in order to extend the life of a diesel engine, you should know and follow several rules when turning off the engine.
Instructions
Step 1
Shut off the fuel supply to shut off the diesel engine. For passenger cars, to do this, turn the key in the ignition lock to the required position. In this case, an electric valve will work, shutting off the supply of diesel fuel through the fuel line. On modern models, the supply of control impulses to open the injectors is stopped.
Step 2
On trucks, large buses and tractors, press the button located on the floor near the driver's feet or on the dashboard, or on the dedicated lever. In this case, the mechanical drive will cut off the fuel supply to the fuel pump. Please note that simply pressing a button is not enough. After pressing, hold it down until the diesel turns off.
Step 3
To use the fuel cut-off device as an engine brake on a truck or bus, stop the diesel engine with the engine without disengaging the clutch. This will cause the vehicle to slow down. Use this technique when approaching a traffic light or going downhill and only on trucks (buses) equipped with a mechanical fuel shutoff. On passenger cars with an electric valve, using this method can lead to a breakdown of the power supply system.
Step 4
In the event of a breakdown of the electric valve shutting off the diesel fuel supply, use the following technique to turn off the engine: without disengaging the gear, release the clutch while pressing the brake. To make this technique more effective, switch to the highest gear in advance.
Step 5
When operating a diesel engine at low temperatures (minus 25 and below), before stopping the diesel, pour a glass of gasoline into the oil sump. Gasoline will temporarily reduce the viscosity of the oil and make it easier to start. After starting and warming up the engine, gasoline will evaporate and evaporate through the crankcase ventilation. Change the oil after the active use of this method at the end of the winter period, as gasoline accelerates the oxidation of the oil.
Step 6
Wait 1-3 minutes before turning off the diesel engine, letting it idle. This will significantly extend the life of the turbine by allowing the oil to cool and cool down and drain from the turbocharger before shutting down. Naturally, this technique is not necessary for diesel engines not equipped with a turbocharger.
Step 7
Modern diesel foreign cars are equipped with turbo timers, which provide forced operation of the diesel engine for some time after it is turned off. Turbo timers with an intelligent control system calculate the required time after which the engine will be turned off, taking into account the duration and intensity of the loads on it.
