Driving in foggy conditions requires more experience than driving in rain. In some cases, the fog is so strong that it is better not to tempt fate and interrupt the trip. During the fog, dozens of accidents occur, a large number of people are killed and injured.

Why is fog dangerous?

Fog creates hazardous road conditions. During fog, visibility decreases and orientation becomes difficult. The perception of vehicle speed is erroneous. The speed of the oncoming car seems to be small, when in fact it is moving fast enough.

Fog distorts all colors other than red. Therefore, the traffic signal is red - it is clearly visible in foggy conditions.

In fog, it is easy to make a mistake in choosing a road, because landmarks are hidden by fog, intersections are not visible.

How to ride in fog

During foggy driving speed should be significantly reduced. The speed should not be more than half the visibility distance in meters. That is, with a visibility of 20 m, the speed can be no more than 10 km / h.

When driving in foggy conditions, it is necessary to turn on the dipped headlights, which better illuminate the road than the high beam. If there are fog lights, turn them on together with the dipped beam. Fog lights have a wider and lower beam of light that penetrates the fog better than conventional headlights. If the windows are fogged, the heating and ventilation system of the passenger compartment should be used.

When driving in fog, you need to constantly monitor the speed of the car using the speedometer. If there are markings on the road, you must take a central position between the lines of the markings dividing the lanes. You can navigate the road by the sidewalk, shoulder, or a solid white marking line that marks the edge of the carriageway.

Prohibited activities in foggy conditions

During foggy weather, do not get too close to the vehicle in front and use the rear lights of that vehicle as a guide. In this case, a misconception about the distance to this vehicle and its speed may be formed.

Do not move too close to the center line of the road - you can create a dangerous situation on the road. You should never try to drive through a low-lying area of fog at high speed on the road. Fog along this section of the path can hide people and objects. In foggy conditions, it is very risky and dangerous to overtake the vehicle in front.
