Power capacitors in the field of car audio have long taken the status of an essential accessory for a powerful sound system. In addition to improving the sound characteristics, they make it easier to operate the battery during a cold start of the engine.

Necessary

  • - Screwdriver;
  • - hexagon socket wrench;
  • - a hammer;
  • - electrical connectors;
  • - insulating tape or heat shrinkage;
  • - pliers;
  • - 12V bulb.

Instructions

Step 1

Place a capacitor near a powerful amplifier. The goal is to obtain a minimum distance between the power supply terminals of the amplifier and the capacitor electrodes. Consider an important point so that during the operation of the machine, it was impossible even to accidentally short-circuit the terminals of the capacitor, because this could damage the capacitor or cause a fire.

Step 2

Measure the required lengths of the supply wires between the capacitor and the amplifier. To make the power wiring as reliable as possible, make connections without cutting the wires. To do this, mark the lengths that you obtained as a result of measurements from the ends of the plus and minus conductors, put marks with a marker. Allow 5cm of insulation to be cut. To connect to a capacitor, the shanks on its connectors must be thicker, in which the wire will be folded in half, so select the appropriate connectors.

Step 3

Strip the ends of the wires, put the connectors on them and crimp them with a special tool, in extreme cases, crimping can be done using a vise. If neither is available, stamp the connector with the wire with a hammer. To do this, put the end of the wire with the connector attached to it on a beam and hit the connector with a hammer to clamp the wire in it. Try not to hit the eyelet, because the quality of the electrical contact will depend on the quality of its surface.

Step 4

Strip the insulation according to the marks previously marked with a marker. Remove about 2 lengths of insulation that you removed from the end of the wire, fold the wire in half at this point for best results, squeeze the fold with pliers and push the capacitor connector onto it. Crimp it in the same way as you did in the previous step, and do this operation with the second wire.

Step 5

Use duct tape or suitable sized heat shrink tubing to insulate the connector shanks. It is advisable to choose the color of the insulation so that the negative wires are indicated in black, and the positive wires in red.

Step 6

Connect amplifier and capacitor observing polarity. Note that the power wires must go to the capacitor and then to the amplifier. Using a socket wrench, tighten the bolts on the capacitor terminals and using a screwdriver, secure the supply wires to the amplifier block.

Step 7

After finishing the installation, charge the capacitor to connect the power wiring to the battery. To do this, connect the negative wire to the car body and take any 12V light bulb, connect it to the gap between the battery positive and the amplifier positive wire. It will light up, but will soon go out. This means that the capacitor is charged and the positive lead can be connected to the battery.
