When replacing a number of car parts, many drivers find that in addition to using standard material, it is possible to install a fiberglass part. Usually it is somewhat more expensive than its steel counterpart and even carbon fiber reinforced plastic, but does it make sense to overpay a little for such a solution and how reliable is it in general?

About fiberglass

Fiberglass is often called fiberglass, but the distinction between names is not so important. It is a composite material that is used in the manufacture of a wide variety of auto parts. Often, the hood, bumper, doors, spoiler, roof and fenders are made from it, which are used for tuning a car. But why do many owners abandon standard parts in favor of fiberglass, and is there any point in replacing parts on your car?

Fiberglass is made on the basis of glass fiber, after which it is impregnated with polyester and epoxy resins, which give it increased hardness and strength. The outer side of the product is additionally lined with gelcoat, it gives the details a smooth structure and protects from all external influences. The use of this material increases resistance to ultraviolet rays and atmospheric precipitation.

Fiberglass is able to withstand temperatures from -60 to +80 ° C. Most importantly, this material is incredibly light compared to standard parts; many experts consider it the most advanced solution in modern car tuning.

For comparison: the hood lid of the tenth model Lada weighs about 16 kg. The fiberglass replacement for this element weighs only 6 kg, so the difference is simply obvious. The use of such parts can significantly reduce the weight of the car, and this will be relevant when using the car as a sports option.

Minuses

The main problem with fiberglass is its reduced strength. On impact, the part cracks and collapses. The standard elements look more attractive in this regard. But the use of a special frame when installing fiberglass parts allows you to completely protect the driver and the main working parts of the vehicle.

The question of whether it is worth installing such parts is a controversial point, and the final decision is made only by the driver.
