Installing a split gear on the engine allows you to adjust its parameters, "playing" the valve timing. For example, you can increase the output of the engine at high speeds at the expense of traction at low speeds and vice versa. Or "catch" the average settings, making the engine work uniform in the entire crankshaft speed range.

Necessary

  • - split gear;
  • - dial indicators.

Instructions

Step 1

Before installing the split gear, which makes it possible to adjust the timing of the timing on your car, copy the labels on it from the standard camshaft pulley gear. After installing such a gear on the camshaft, make sure that the mark on the flywheel and on the setting scale, as well as the marks on the installed gear and the timing belt cover, are completely aligned.

Step 2

Check the overlap of the inlet and outlet valves of the fourth cylinder - both valves should be open by an equal amount, if the standard shaft is equal in lift. Tuning shafts must have other values of the values specified in the design of the shaft. To correct valve overlap, loosen the split pinion bolts and rotate the camshaft to the desired position. Thus, the camshaft is set to zero position.

Step 3

If the engine has an unequal-lifting camshaft (for example, a tuning camshaft), then use dial gauges to control overlap. They require three pieces: to determine the movement of the intake and exhaust valves and determine the TDC position. With their help, you can adjust the desired amount of overlap for which the camshaft is designed. In this case, be sure to install the indicator feet on the rockers of the valves.

Step 4

Now you can proceed directly to the very correction of the valve timing in accordance with the requirements for the motor. Without the absence of a motor stand and measuring equipment, track the changing parameters by the method of control trips, guided by the results of dynamic measurements and subjective feelings.

Step 5

To increase traction at low and medium speeds, turn the camshaft relative to the crankshaft in the direction of rotation (ahead). To increase the engine output at high speeds and get additional power, turn the shaft relative to the crankshaft against the rotation (lagging). When correcting the phases, do not move from the zero position more than 3-4 degrees along the camshaft.
