The three-phase electric motor can be connected to various types of electrical networks. The way it is connected depends on the mains voltage and the number of phases in it. If the network is single-phase, an additional node is required - a three-phase inverter.

Instructions

Step 1

De-energize the device in which the motor is installed or it is intended to be installed. Discharge high voltage capacitors appropriately, if any.

Step 2

Make sure that the mains power supply as well as the internal wiring of the unit allows the connection of an electric motor of this capacity.

Step 3

Three-phase electric motors are designed to be powered by one of two effective voltages, which are indicated on its body through a fraction. The lower number, indicated before the fraction, characterizes the voltage that must be applied to the motor if the windings are delta-connected. The larger number after the fraction characterizes the voltage that should be applied to the motor if its windings are star-connected.

Step 4

Connect the motor windings with a star or a delta, depending on what voltage it will supply. Ground the motor housing, and never ground the center point of the star!

Step 5

Connect the phase wires to the motor. Fasten it firmly so that the shaft is not connected to anything. Turn on the voltage, let the motor spin, then release the voltage, and then when it slows down a lot, you can easily notice in which direction it was rotating before. If it turns out to be rotating in the wrong direction, make sure the motor is de-energized and the high-voltage capacitors in the device are discharged, and then swap any two phases. Check it again in the same way, and make sure that the direction of rotation is correct this time.

Step 6

Do not use capacitors to power a three-phase motor from a single-phase network, unless the load on the shaft is minimal. In all other cases, their use can lead to seizure and subsequent fire. Apply a modern three-phase inverter. It will allow you, when operating from a single-phase network, to receive full power from the engine, smoothly adjust the speed and reverse without additional switching. In some cases, the use of three-phase inverters is justified when powered from a three-phase network.

Step 7

After making sure that the motor runs correctly and rotates in the correct direction, install it in the device in which it is supposed to be used, and then check the operation of this device as a whole.
