Has a stone flew out from under the wheels of a car in front left a crack, a deep scratch, or has it broken through the windshield through and through? What should you do in such a situation? You can contact a car service, where the auto glass will be replaced quickly and efficiently. Or you can replace the glass yourself, almost without losing quality.

Necessary

  • - new windshield;
  • - degreaser;
  • - primer for glass sealant;
  • - special sealant for gluing glass;
  • - a powerful pistol (better than a domestic one, not a Chinese one, because the sealant is dense and it is quite difficult to squeeze it out, which is why a Chinese-made pistol will quickly break);
  • - Scotch.
  • In case you suddenly damage the old gum, and the new glass goes without it, then purchase a rubber seal as well.
  • You will also need the volunteer help of another person.

Instructions

Step 1

So, you have acquired a new windshield and the necessary tools. Then remove the remnants of the old glass. Remove anything that could interfere with your work: windscreen wipers, dashboard (if necessary) and trim.

Step 2

Cover the hood and interior of the car with a cloth in case the glass starts to crumble when removing. If the glass can be simply squeezed out, do it. If this is not possible, remove the glass using special suction cups (you can use 4 plungers instead) or use a string to cut the glass. When doing this, be careful not to damage the plastic parts. Use gloves to avoid injury to your hands. Completely remove any old sealant residues to avoid difficulties with subsequent primer application.

Step 3

Place the glass face down on the cloth covering the hood and slide the seal over the glass. Then degrease the contact surfaces. Prime the body and new glass at the joints with a thin layer.

Step 4

Apply the sealant evenly, without sags or breaks, over the entire surface of the windshield cutout. In case the sealant is hard to squeeze out, heat the tube up to 40 degrees with a blowtorch.

Step 5

Take glass, preferably with special suction cups, and install it instead of the old glass. Do not overdo it, press gently, otherwise the "extra" sealant will come out, and then you will have to remove it. Fix the glass with tape, pulling it to the car body, and wait a little.

Step 6

It is undesirable to change glass in an unheated garage in frosty weather. It is better to carry out this procedure in a warm place, so the sealant will dry faster. In this case, it is necessary that the car stands on a level surface. Also, try not to bang the doors, as the glass can move and subsequently shatter.
