Correctly selected shock absorbers not only provide good handling, but also provide ride comfort. According to the device, shock absorbers are divided into oil and gas, so many motorists have to make a responsible choice sooner or later.

Instructions

Step 1

The main task of the suspension shock absorber is to compensate for the vibration of the springs when the vehicle is moved over uneven terrain. Thanks to the stabilizer bar, the elastic wheel stops compressing and unclenching almost immediately after being triggered on a bump, because of which the car does not swing, its controllability is maintained. For shock absorbers, there are several important criteria for evaluating: response time, stiffness, duration of effective operation and service life, as well as cost. The final choice should be made both on the basis of critical assessment and taking into account personal wishes.

Step 2

The shock absorber consists of two cylindrical chambers connected by flow holes. In these chambers, a double piston is installed, when pressed, the volume of one chamber decreases and the other increases. The chambers can be filled with either viscous oil or high pressure inert gas. This is the main difference between oil and gas shock absorbers.

Step 3

Since oil is an incompressible fluid, shock absorbers of this type are also characterized by increased efficiency: less rigidity and higher adaptability. On the other hand, in oil shock absorbers there is always a free chamber volume filled with air. During intensive work, air bubbles appear in the oil, due to which the oil does not move from chamber to chamber, but is compressed, which leads to a decrease in efficiency. Also, with frequent contractions, a noticeable heating of the working fluid is observed: the oil becomes less viscous and flows more easily, due to which the efficiency decreases. Hydraulic shock absorbers are ideal for uneven roads and low speed cross-country travel. They handle bumps well, but rock the car too much when driving at high speeds.

Step 4

Gas shock absorbers are characterized by faster response, but their rigidity is much higher. When driving on a highway with good coverage, they perfectly stabilize the car and allow you to maintain high-speed driving conditions. They also provide better handling of the car, but with prolonged movement over bumps, they lead to damage to other suspension elements. Gas shock absorbers are more expensive than oil ones, however, they also have a longer service life. In general, these shock absorbers will appeal to drivers who prefer a sporty driving style.
