A common reason for the generator's failure to generate electricity for the "life support" of the on-board systems of the car, in most cases, lies in the weak belt tension or in the unacceptable wear of the graphite brushes. To restore its performance, it is enough to tighten the drive or replace the current-collecting parts.
Necessary
- - socket wrench 8 mm,
- - screwdriver.
Instructions
Step 1
Starting in 1988, domestic cars began to be equipped with 37.3701 generators, replacing the G-222. There are practically no fundamental design differences in both devices, except for the fact that in the latest developments, three additional diodes have appeared.
Step 2
On the engine, the generator is mounted on the right-hand side, under the exhaust manifold. The front and rear covers, cast from lightweight aluminum alloy, have lugs for its bottom fastening, into which rubberized buffer bushings are inserted, due to which the risk of breakage of the device case when tightening the bolt on the bracket is reduced.
Step 3
In the upper part of the front cover of the generator, a metal stud М10Х1, 5 is screwed in, designed to secure the device with a nut in a certain place on the tension bar.
Step 4
The drive for it is a rubberized V-belt connecting the pulleys of the crankshaft, the water pump and the generator, the tension of which is carried out in such a way that at the moment a force of 10 kgf is applied to it from above, it sags by no more than one and a half centimeters.
Step 5
In order to check the technical condition of the current-collecting graphite brushes of the generator, unscrew the fastening bolts of the dielectric housing in which they are located, and disconnect the wiring from them.
Step 6
Remove the brush holder together with the voltage regulator from the device body and inspect the current collectors. Then press them with your finger: they should move easily and freely in the grooves due to the return springs inside the holder. The minimum length of the brushes is five millimeters, which is the maximum allowable wear rate.
Step 7
If the length of the brushes is shorter than the specified parameters, or approaches them, or their movement in the grooves is difficult, as well as the detection of mechanical damage in them, all of the above requires their unconditional replacement.
