The Opel Astra GTS in the three-door hatchback version received the prestigious international Red Dot Design Award for its exterior design in 2012. This is not Opel's only achievement. In 2010, the same model won the same prize in a five-door hatchback version.
The Red Dot Design Award was established in 1955 by the European Design Institute of North Rhine-Westphalia, located in Essen, Germany. The awards are presented to designers and product manufacturers in recognition of their outstanding quality and design excellence. All winners of the competition must be exhibited at the Red Dot Design Museum, located in the same Essen. Thanks to this tradition, the museum has become the largest collection of design achievements in the world.
The Opel Astra GTS competed for victory in the product design category, which also included third-party vehicles, furniture, home appliances, machinery, tools, and more. The main symbol of the Red Dot Design Award - a stylized red dot - appeared in 1991.
In 2012, the Opel Astra GTS took part in the Red Dot design competition. Together with the car, 4,515 different products from 1,800 different companies from 58 countries participated in the competition. All nominees were announced in 19 categories. And not only automobiles. The jury was made up of 30 renowned international design experts. It is clear from this that it is rather difficult to win this competition. But on the other hand, Opel designers have already developed cars that could win the Red Dot competition. Among them were not only the 5-door Astra hatchback, but also other models: the Astra station wagon, the Insignia family, the sporty GT, the Flextreme concept cars and the GT / E.
The Opel Astra GTS model impressed the expert jury not only with its advanced design, but also with its high quality and modern technologies. Astra's design is the epitome of technological aesthetics. Sporty proportions, a longer bonnet and a low roofline accentuate the vehicle's dynamics and style. When creating auto design, special attention was paid. After all, according to the management of Opel, design plays the most important role in choosing a car. The Red Dot Design Award is a testament to the craftsmanship of German designers and their precision in execution.
