"To light a cigarette" means to connect the power wires from the discharged battery to the working battery of someone else's car. Car enthusiasts are often faced with the fact that the battery has run out and has ceased to ensure the operation of the engine and the entire electrics of the car in a given mode. It is especially unpleasant when the battery runs out somewhere on the road, very far from home.
Signs of a discharged battery
Visual and audible signs of a discharged battery are the absence or weak glow of the car's lamps, when the alarm is turned on, a crackling sound, an alarm howl, a weak horn signal, a complete absence or weak operation of the starter when trying to start the engine are heard.
But this does not always mean that the battery is dead. Sometimes similar symptoms can occur with poor contact of the power terminals of the battery. In this case, it is necessary to remove and clean them. Then try to start the car again. If the car does not start again, then one thing remains - to brake the passing car, approximately of the same class as yours, and ask for a "light". That is, start your car from the battery of another car.
Procedure for "lighting" a car
Bring the donor car to your car as close as possible, but so that the car bodies do not touch. The driver of the donor car turns off the engine and opens the hood of the car. The "patient" also opens the hood and disconnects the negative terminal of his battery.
Next, you need special wires with "crocodiles" (clips, clothespins) or some wires with a large cross-section
connect the plus (+) of the donor to the plus (+) of your car, and connect the wire of the minus (-) terminal to the cylinder block or to the engine mount.
Now start your engine and let it warm up to at least 50 ° C or steady engine speed. Then carefully connect the negative terminal of your battery to your discharged battery. Then disconnect the plus (+) from your machine and the "donor" machine at the same time.
Then disconnect the negative terminal from the "donor" battery and from the mass of your car, again, preferably at the same time. Try how all the on-board equipment works for you - turn signals, emergency lights, horn, radio. Thank your "donor" and continue your way home, being careful not to turn off the engine. When you arrive home, change the battery or charge it.
Some Recommendations
A prerequisite for this method of starting the engine is the presence of special wires of large cross-section with clamps, the so-called crocodiles. Therefore, when preparing for the winter, it is advisable to include them in the toolbox. They can be useful for helping another car, and for "lighting" your own car.
You can only "light up" from a car with a new or at least relatively old battery, because charging from an old battery can lead to its complete discharge. It is not necessary to carry out the lighting process in a very severe frost. When charging a dead battery, do not touch metal parts of the car with your bare hands. It is also necessary to ensure that the wires of the "crocodiles" do not come into contact with each other.
